Epic July 4 parade in Plymouth 🇺🇸🎇
On a summer trip to the town of Eastham, MA, where our first American ancestor, Christopher Strout, helped the English colonize the Cape Code Wampanoag, we noticed the area was dotted with both Native American and English settler names. These were neighbors and spouses of the Strouts - yet no mention of them. Their centuries-old tombstones were weather-beaten and disregarded.
It reminded us that legacy isn't built by accident - as the North American colonizers knew all too well, it happens in committees and through lawsuits and the generations-long, conscious effort to make history remember your name.
The new Strouts.org is an innovative community hub dedicated to restoring and preserving the proper historical place of the Strouts in early Colonial America and today, as well as acknowledging and helping right the wrongs that got us (and other families prominently featured in the area) where we are in the first place - specifically the enslavement and genocide of Native Americans and Africans.
We can't do this alone -- Strouts.org will be a centralized planning area for these legacy projects, where Strouts around the world can suggest their own regional projects or offer historical expertise, which will be needed for any legislative renaming efforts or recognitions, such as Strout Days. Maybe a reunion??
Let's figure this out together! Join us at strouts.org and donate to one of our current projects!
